ABIRATA YATRA, (Incessant journey), is Dr. Chowdhury’s debut novel, that earned her the prestigious AsomĀ Sahitya Sabha Award in 1981. She wrote the novel while she went underground as a leader of the historic Assam Movement. The Memory of those days still reverberates and shakes every mind of the Assamese.
The central character of the novel is Prithivi, although qa conglomerate of Young boys and girls, deeply involved in the movement, revolves round it. Prithivi, a commoner, tendered uncommon sacrifice toweards meeting her goal, but it ultimately becomes a continuous journey of sacrifice. Another memorable character is joseph, an educated mazdoor youth who also struggles logically for self- existence. Ashanta, Samudra Phukan and others start their never- ending journey from darkness to light while giving away everything they possessed. An enduring saga of sacrifice, Abirata yatra entwines some tearful anecdotes into a neatly Woven plot studded with bold characters.
